The paint is singing, and my brush is dancing. Standing still to paint was my biggest hurdle. The joy I experienced in painting my Kaleidoscope body of work was bordering on self-indulgent. I was drawn to my studio day after day with excitement and intrigue as to what I would see next.
My paintings portray the enjoyable experience of seeing sound. Synaesthesia is a gift in which when I hear music and natural sounds, I also see a myriad of moving, three dimensional, intricate colours and patterns in my visual field.
Kaleidoscope is a series of paintings reflecting my synaesthesia and creative response to a delightful set of traditional folk tunes originating from Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Sweden. The music moved through me resulting in states of joy, vivacious energy, melancholy and longing back to the irresistible pull to dance. I often did dance around my studio!
The word Kaleidoscope originates from the combination of Ancient Greek words meaning profoundly beautiful (kalos) and to give shape and form (eidos). Through the kaleidoscopic lens of art and music I invite you to observe beautiful forms.
